Tools for choosing and using software
Finders built on the rankings, plus small calculators and generators that run in your browser.
All tools
- FinderSoftware finderThe software finder searches the products in the rankings on this site. Choose a kind, category, platform and price rule, and each result shows its best rank. The results are server-rendered, so the form works without JavaScript.
- FinderAlternatives finderType the name of a product you already use, and the finder lists the other products from the same rankings in ranked order. Free-only and open-source-only filters narrow the list, and links lead to the product's full alternatives page and to comparison pages.
- BuilderSoftware stack builderPick a role and the builder lists the top-ranked product for each job the role usually has, such as notes, tasks, invoicing and a password manager. Each pick links to its ranking, and a switch limits the picks to products that are free to use.
- CalculatorSubscription cost calculatorEnter each subscription with its price and billing cycle, and the calculator shows monthly, yearly and five-year totals. It also lists the most expensive items and projects five years with a yearly price change. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
- GeneratorPassword generatorSet a length and character sets for a random password, or choose three to ten words for a passphrase. The generator draws from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, shows an entropy estimate in bits, and sends nothing to a server.
- TimerPomodoro focus timerA Pomodoro timer that counts focus sessions and breaks in your browser. Focus length defaults to 25 minutes, short breaks to 5 minutes, and the long break to 15 minutes after four rounds. The countdown also shows in the browser tab title.
- CounterWord and character counterPaste text to count words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. The counter estimates reading and speaking time, lists the most frequent words, and shows how many characters remain under a limit.
- CalculatorBook reading time calculatorEnter a book's length as pages or words, and your reading speed, to get the total hours. Then pick a finish date to see the pages needed per day, or enter minutes per day to see how many days the book takes.
- CalculatorBackup storage calculatorEnter the size of your data, the share that changes each day, the days of history to keep and the number of copies. The calculator estimates storage for one full backup plus daily changes, per copy and in total, and it ignores compression and deduplication.
How the tools fit the rankings
The finders read the same scores and facts as the ranked lists, so a result in the software finder is the product you would reach by browsing a ranking, only filtered by what you need. The calculators and generators run in your browser and send nothing to a server. Each tool page links to the rankings, comparisons and articles that match its subject.
